Starting Over by Origins- A Real Face Saver

Starting Over, by Origins (srp. $45.00), just launched and it is quite an impressive product. It uses Argan Leaf and Green Algae, working with Mimosa Tree Bark to help rebuild natural collagen and prevent against Glycation. What's "glycation?" Excess sugar in skin and environmental concerns fuel the destructive process of Glycation which causes strong collagen to “ball up” and collapse resulting in lines, wrinkles and tone and texture damage. But, apparently, the bark of the Mimosa Tree is a powerful natural collagen booster.

That's not all that that Starting Over packs into a little, glass jar. A skin-evening complex helps enhance dull and uneven skin tone with Apple extract, Cucumber extract and Scutellaria Baicalensis Root. Resurfacing agents of Chestnut-Castenae Sativa Extract, Salicylic Acid and Mannose Phosphate from corn weaken the bonds that anchor dead skin cells helping to resurface skin. Caffeine from coffee beans, Turmeric and Yeast Ferment help provide antioxidant benefits and protect against irritation. And of course, every skin needs to be moisturized, so Sodium Hyaluronate, Trehalose from Corn, Wheat and Barley extracts provide moisturization that lasts (for hours) after you've applied it.

Origins is known for natural, effective skin care products, but in studies performed with real women, age-erasing moisturizers provided both immediate and long term results. In less than 1 day, Origins claims that their unique line-leveling formula will begin to amplify the natural production of collagen. In their studies, after one month, 100% of panelists saw a clinically significant improvement in skin tone. 96% felt the product left skin with a smoother texture; 92% felt the product left skin with a healthier appearance; 87% felt the product left skin brighter, more radiant; and 81% felt the product improved skin’s elasticity. After two months, 94% of the women studies saw what Origins calls a "clinically significant improvement" in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Origins Starting Over™ comes in two versions: the Age-erasing moisturizer with Mimosa; and a Starting Over™ Age-erasing oil-free moisturizer with Mimosa. I tried the regular (not oil free) version. The cream is rich and thick, and very nice. It absorbs very quickly, has a bit of a citrus scent (just a pleasant touch) and feels very lightweight on my skin. As with most products The Advice Sisters review, it is nearly impossible to verify how well a product will work for everyone, under every circumstance. I couldn't dedicate a month (let alone two months) to substantiate or negative Origin's claims for results. I did use the product for a short while, and on and off since then. I really like it. Really!!

For starters, I love that this product, even though it is moisturizing and rich, didn't make me break out (bonus number one). It didn't irritate my always-sensitive skin (bonus number two). My skin felt soft (bonus number three), and looked good (bonus number four). I can't quantify luminosity, elasticity or even brightness. I didn't see a huge softening of wrinkles, but again, I didn't use it long enough to see serious results. My take, from experience with this product, and more than 11 years of reviewing skincare, is that this is a great products for those who want anti-aging benefits, but not harsh chemicals or invasive procedures. It is a good product definitely worthy of your consideration if you want effective anti-aging, moisturizing, and skin-enhancing results, at a reasonable price.

Starting Over by Origins is available at Origins Retail Stores, select Department Stores and the Origins Web Site. The suggested retail price is $45.00 1.7 oz.

In love with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Colors

The ingredients to create the color purple used to be so rare, the color was reserved only for royalty.

But this season, purples, plums, berries, and wine colors are the must-haves both in clothing, and for nails. These days, however, you don't have to be Queen to wear this regal color. Insta-Dri Nail Color from Sally Hansen gives you a variety of gorgeous, jewel-tones in the purple family for just $4.95 per bottle!

It is hard to pick a perfect shade--there are so many gorgeous ones. But three trendy shades I love for now are "Wined-Up," a glorious, metallic merlot that looks elegant and is a great alternative to reds. "Cinna-Snap" is a blood ruby burgundy, gleaming a rich and without shimmer. It looks like precious jewels, or perhaps, velvet. A not quite brown, not quite plum, not quite copper, is the shimmery "Mochachino." No matter which one you choose, you will be in style, in seconds!

I have reviewed Insta-Dri in past What Works Beauty columns. I love the large brush that lets you swipe on the smooth, opaque color in literally, one swipe. I love the way it lasts for days, too. The exclusive "Flexiglass" complex gives you shine and strength. Apply it in seconds, get gorgeous color and it lasts longer than many salon manicures? It's true!

If you didn't get these in your stocking for the holidays, go to your favorite drug or mass market retailer and treat yourself. You won't pay royally, but you will feel special!

Bissell Helps You Handle Pet Fur, and More!

You've just gotten an adorable puppy or kitten for Christmas....awwwwww!

As adorable as pets are, they also leave a little gift for you everywhere they go...-pet hair. Gobs and gobs of it. You can (and should) brush your pet regularly, but still, the hair will show up in tufts and clumps that stick to your clothes and your couch.

...And, (how can I say this politely), dogs and cats have a nasty habit of vomiting food and hair, too, usually on your favorite couch or prized Persian rug. I have been a cat lover (and fur "mom") for decades, so I know. If you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot, or if you have more than one furry friend in your house, you're going to have pet hair, everywhere. Luckily, Bissell has some tools to help your handle fur, and other things you don't want all over your home.
I admit I was dubious when I saw these at the Product-n-Press holiday showcase a few months back. I've tried a lot of pet hair removal, (and odor/stain) removal, products. Most do work to some degree, but not as thoroughly as I'd like. I was more hopeful with the Bissell tools, because the company is so well regarded for both vacuums, and rug cleaning products.
The Bissell Universal Pet Hair Vacuum Tools srp. $29.99 arrives in a boxed set, with two essential items you can attach to any existing vacuum: a Pet Contour Tool® featuring a pink, rubberized top with little "fingers" that bend and flex to reach where hair collects (e.g. in crevices) so it's perfect for upholstery, stairs and car interiors, and a 6” wide Pet Turbobrush® that has rotating brushes with rubber fingers that works amazingly well on rugs, chairs, beds and sofas. If you let your cats sleep on your blanket (we can't actually stop ours) you need this tool! Both tools include adapters to fit all major vacuums. The turbobrush did pick up cat hair, but you need to "scrub" back and forth quite a bit (the tool works best on area rugs), and many vacuums are sold with attachments similar to this one. But the Pet Contour Tool performed better than most in pickup up fur that gets "embedded" into fabric. No amount of sticky tape, regular vacuuming, or other hand-held tools gets this fur out, once it's worked it's way into your comforters, couches, or the crevices of furniture. I tried it on a blanket that my cats like to snooze on, and that no amount of cleaning really gets rid of all the fur. The Pet Contour Tool grabbed even the stickiest fur bits and pulled them right into the brush and into the vacuum. It takes a bit of effort to use, but the result is (finally!) fur-free fabrics! The little rubbery "fingers" really lift hair out so you can finally sit on your fabrics without getting up looking like a Yeti!

I can't speak for dogs (I'm truly a cat person 100%) but I haven't ever met a cat that didn't like to vomit on the thing you prize the most, especially if it's white or ivory. There are two Bissell Cat Stain and Odor Removers in spray pump bottles (there are also formulas just for dogs). The Enzyme Action Cleaner gets to the base of troublesome stains resulting from urine, feces, blood, and vomit. The Oxygen Active Cleaner permanently removes tough pet stains and may be used on carpeting, upholstery, and pet beds or on any water-safe surface. The cost is under $13.00 for a 22 oz. bottle, and having both of these, at the ready, in your under-the-sink cabinet might give you a fighting chance to get rid of the stain and the odor. The Oxygen Active formula removes tough cat stains -- even those colored by dyes in pet food. Most importantly, it's non-toxic for your pets and your kids. Bissell's patented odor technology discourages pets from re-soiling areas, although mine still gravitate back to the places they know...and (sigh!) love.

These are super-easy to use. Just remove "solid" particles (e.g. hairballs) or excess liquid. Shake the bottle of product well, and saturate the soiled area, as well as surrounding area. Let the product sit for 5-10 minutes to penetrate stain. Then all you have to do is blot with a dry, color-safe towel to lift the stain and absorb as much of the remaining solution as possible. Rinse and repeat as needed and stay off the cleaned area until it's dry.

It's easy and effective. That's the good news. The not so good news is that powerful odor eaters and cleansers cannot be used on absolutely every fabric. These are not recommended for use on velvet, silk, vinyl, or leather upholstery. So my advice if you're new to being a fur mommy or daddy is to cover that priceless silk throw grandma brought back from China with plastic, or better yet, put it away or out of reach, until you know your pet's habits.

What I Hate About Me - New on the Style Network

What I like about "What I Hate About Me" (a new show that debuted  yesterday, Saturday, January 2nd at 9: 00 p.m.on the Style Network), is that it attempts to help women deal with a wide variety of  issues that many women feel when it comes to image, without makeing the "change" solely about clothes, hair, and makeup.  After all, the best body, the chic-est clothes, and the sexiest hair and makeup won't make you confident and happy if there are other, emotional or internal issues that mar your vision of yourself.

Each episode of "What I Hate About Me" features one woman who volunteers the top 10 things she "can't stand" about herself.  Hosted by the willowy and perky  ("Clean House" ) actress, Lisa Arch, the show offers "experts" who help the makeover subject make the changes necessary to make to solve the dilemma or problem.

I gathered a small group of friends to watch the preview show of What I Hate About Me.  Some felt the very title was a negative.  Shouldn't we be focusing on what someone likes about herself, and downplay her supposed faults. But ok...we went with it.

In this debut show,  a very tall young woman with the unusual name, Anbar, dealsl not only with her height, but also some serious, and some trite, personal image issues. I am not quite sure why Anbar was picked, but clearly, no one forced her into it. This gets a thumbs up from me, since I hate to see nice people squirm as the makeover team tries to convince the victim that change is good, and that they know what changes are best.

The program appears to be a makeover show in the "Queer Eye" genrie.  But the ground-breaking "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" show featured quick, physical or image fixes, and focused little on life enhancement.  This show seems to want to strive for more depth, but that's a complex goal, and there is just 60 minutes to fix 10 "hates" in one whirlwind day.  Your eally can't do very much in a fedw minutes when you have to present, discuss, and deal with each topic.  Also, some of the issues brought up were serious, and some, just silly.   On the segment featuring Anbar, other than the fact that Anbar couldn't get "cute" clothes that fit 6'+ frame, she didn't really seem to need an image makeover at all. Anbar's more interesting and serious "hates" included a chronic dermatological condition, and horredously unhealthy eating habits. But these are not things that can be fixed with powder and paint, or in a day.  Other "issues" seemed contrived and out of place, such as Anbar's inability to write a nice thank you note, or her frustration with not being able to add "color" to a bland, rental apartment.

Real change doesn't come with a quick fix, administered by an "expert."  But still, we all liked the concept of the show. I just think it tries to do too much, too fast. The format would work better if the show followed more than one woman per show over a period of weeks, as in "The Biggest Loser" or "Ruby" or the like.  My group of unofficial reviewers wanted to love Anbar. We wanted her to emerge from the hour, smiling, confident, and really hopeful about her future.  But at the big reveal to family and friends (the classic way to end a makeover show) we just didn't believe that Anbar had been transformed, any more than buying a new outfit on her own, would do.

Another downer is host Lisa Arch. She's attractive, but she didn't seem at all qualified to be a "guide" and give the makeover subject emotional support, or even a bit more perspective as they went through the various issues on tap for the episode.  In fact, She seemed ill at ease when Anbar, at one point, became emotional.  Lisa isn't  an advice columnist, a life or career expert, or even an image consultant or stylist, so we felt she added little to Anbar's supposed transformation process. The show would benefit from the services of a bona-fide  advice or lifestyle expert, especially one that has image consultant/beauty/fashion expertise).  Actually, those are my qualifications)!!   In this show, celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson (who I have met on a number of occasions- a really nice man!)  seemed better suited to the task of dealing with Anbar's transformation, than did Lisa Arch.  My feeling is that if you're going to do a serious makeover show, don't "Hollywood-ize" it. A pretty actress as the host is actually a detriment, since the focus is supposed to be on the beauty of the makeover subject.  Lisa's tall and lean body and glamorous looks, are actually, competition. More useful would be someone who could lend a hand to the makeover subject when things get a bit "bumpy," and whose looks wouldn't compete with the woman who is being made over. How disappointing to go through a makeover only to be upstaged by the host!

The show has promise, although I hope they will make some changes. The Style Network has tons of great shows (including:  How Do I Look?) that are not only fun to watch, but that can help you make some improvements in how you look and feel, too. It is one of my favorite channels and I admit...I watch at least one thing on The Style Network every single day!!!

Alpha Beta Daily Peel by md Skincare Does Great Things for Your Skin

Whenever I think of facial peels, I cringe. Seriously. I have sensitive skin, and although I have to try hundreds of products for the skin, whenever I've tried any kind of facial peel, I have really felt the consequences (and not in a good way).

But a facial peel is one of the only ways you can remove the surface layer of dead, dull, skin cells, and reveal newer, brighter, smoother skin underneath. Peels are nothing to take lightly. Strong peels must be done by a skilled professional, and do-it-yourself peels can be terribly harsh if you don't do them perfectly. If you are to gentle, you won't get the results, and if you overdo it, your face will look like it had a date with a blow torch!

Dr Dennis Gross has created a DIY facial peel called the Alpha Beta Daily Peel by md Skincare that may be one of the few I can recommend to you, and use myself. It is gentle enough to on a daily basis, so your skin continues to improve, with time. It also diminishes the appearance of wrinkles. In addition. It can help to reduce complexion problems (it promotes cell renewal, exfoliates dead skin cells, and helps lift and remove blackhead/waxy plugs that clog pores). It can also manage oil production, tone skin, and increase skin clarity, all without burning it or peeling it to shreds.

If you plan to use this for a month on a daily basis, you will want the $78.00 treatment with 30 applications each in two jars. There is also the option to purchase 10 applications for $28.00 Neither option is drugstore cheap, but it is certainly less expensive than a professional peel in a doctor’s office or salon. The jars are packaged together in a tube. The first jar has the Alpha Beta® Daily Face Peel Step One- 30 pads. The second jar has the Alpha Beta® Daily Face Peel Step two - 30 pads. The first pad is the “refining” (exfoliating) peel, and the second step neutralizes the more than 5 different acids in the first step. Whether you get the 10 day supply, or the 30-day supply, you really should use them up within that time period, so make sure you’re ready to commit to this skincare treatment.

While this peel isn't going to be as dramatic as an in-office treatment, it does have medical-grade ingredients. It's good for all skin types, but was it ok for sensitive skin? Yes, actually. For starters, you can't over-medicate because there is no mixing or guessing how much to use, the pads have a precise blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids, antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, soothing green tea extract, and an oil-free moisturizer. And you don't have to scrub or rub, potentially causing damage and infection.

Here's how to use it (it's super-easy).

Swipe Step 1 pad over face, from forehead downward to neck in semi-circular strokes. Avoid contact with eyes and lips. apply until pad feels dry. Do not rinse or apply other product. Wait 2 minutes.

Follow with Step 2.Step 2: Neutralizing system: swipe over face as in step one and do not rinse.

Then follow with a moisturizer.

Something gentle enough for everyday use gives you gradual results, not the immediate and dramatic results you’d get with a more invasive peel. However you won’t get any serious damage from it either. I didn’t try it as an acne fighter, but there seemed to be mixed reviews on how well it worked for that. My feeling is that the Alpha Beta peel is an easy and safe way to get gentle skin exfoliation that will make your complexion look better, and brighter. That is what it should be used for. If you have serious acne or other skin problems, an at-home beautifying treatment is probably not going to give you the results you need. For anti-aging and general skin health, however, it's a great find.
