Smooth, Hair-Free Body From a Bottle? Sure Thing with Completely Smooth by Completely Bare

In the old days, our ancestors prized body hair. It kept them warm, it made them distinctive, and it was something they couldn't really remove very easily (what with trying to keep predators at bay, and still come up with Woolly Mammoth meat to eat).

Today, a little body hair is festive, but too much is not an asset.  Alas, hair removal isn’t always easy, or cheap.  If you don't have huge amount of body hair that require a lot of professional attention, you might consider getting a bottle of Completely Smooth Body by Completely Bare.  Believe me, Completely Bare knows a lot about hair removal as their salons do a lot of just that--hair removal.

There is a Completely Bare for Body, and one for the Face.  At $42.00 a bottle, it's not exactly cheap, but this product might help you keep hair from growing back so fast, so you'll be making less visits to have hair removed that you don't want, or at least save a little time and effort in shaving and waxing at home. What these products do, is stop (or at least, reduce) the hair growth. The pleasant smelling lotion has moisturizing shea butter, aloe, and Vitamins A, C, D, E & K.  The company says that the product will visibly diminish hair texture by up to 55%, density by up to 50% and length by up to 30%.

I tried the Completely Smooth for Body, in a nice,  flip top tube. It is a rich lotion with shea butter and aloe juice, and it is scented with magnolia, jasmine, bergamot, and vanilla notes–a very light scent. The lotion isn’t lightweight, but it isn’t greasy, either. The key ingredient is Capislow, a plant extract that is scientifically proven to visibly lessen hair texture, density, length and growth. In fact, the bottle has a logo that announces: “clinically proven- reduces hair growth by up to 55%) –after 28 days.  That all sounds great, but there is that one little catch:  you have to use it regularly for nearly a month, twice a day.  I didn't test it long enough to really see a difference, but I barely have time to moisturize once a day, let alone two.  Still, it made a nice moisturizer and it does double duty to soothe a sunburn (or shaving irritation). Hair is supposed to grow back in visibly finer,  so what do you have to lose, but icky, excess hair?! You will, however, use up the bottle fairly fast. Still, if you’d rather smooth your skin than shave, Completely Bare just might be your newest, best "find."

NEST Pumpkin Chai Candle Adds Spice to Your Life

At the end of last July,  I had a unique opportunity to visit  home scent creator, Laura Slatkin’s townhouse, and check out her new, Project Art by NEST, fragranced candles and other home ambiance items.   While the Project Art by NEST candles are reasonably I also got a chance to see some of the new, NESaffordable, I also got a chance to check out some of Laura's more upscale fragranced items, simply called: "NEST."  Laura Slatkin is a remarkable woman who creates amazing home ambiance items.  She's the founder and owner of Candela Group, and she co-founded another home ambiance company,  Slatkin & Co.,  with her husband, Harry.  Then Laura created NEST, a luxe collection home ambiance items, including some of the most beautiful scented candles on the market.

Whenever I think about Fall, I think about the smells of the season as well as the distinctive colors.  This year, pumpkin and spice lovers will be enchanted, literally, by a new, special edition Fall candle called Pumpkin Chai by NEST. The 8.1 oz. candle comes in an orange cardboard box with a design of curves, made from dots. There’s also a distinctive, “NEST” logo stripe (it reminds me a lot of the iconic, “Gucci” stripe) to add upscale contrast.

Inside the box, there's a candle that is super-luxe. A large, semi-translucent, brown glass votive (with subtle NEST logo in orange), holds a richly scented, pumpkin-tinted, candle that will burn for approx. 50 hours. The scent is very much like a comforting, spicy pumpkin chai beverage. The key notes are wild pumpkin, spicy Masala chai, cardamom. Ginger, and cinnamon.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of drinking chai, it’s something you should try it as the weather gets cooler. Pumpkin chai smells rich and warm and creamy and spicy, welcoming and delicious. And the smell of this candle is so intoxicating, you almost want to drink it!

The NEST Pumpkin Chai candle is perfect for upscale Halloween parties, Thanksgiving, holiday parties, or just because you want a little extra joy after a long day or weekend. But, in case you didn’t know, pumpkin is one of those scents men consider very sexy.  So while you’re cuddling up and lighting a candle to add it's spicy notes to the atmosphere in your room, you might also be spicing up your love life!

The price for all this pleasure is a mere $32.00 . You can find less expensive candles but you won’t find nicer ones! You can find this special, Pumpkin Chai NEST candle at Neiman Marcus and fine speciality stores nationwide. You can also go to http://www.nestfragrances.com/ and check out all the other wonderful things that Laura Slatkin has created to make your life and home a bit nicer and more fun!

Barielle's Style In Argyle Nail Polish Collection

For Fall 2010, blackened blues, purples and berries have been replaced by subtle, “tweedy” toned nail polish colors. At first. These toned-down colors look quiet, but believe me, they're still show-offs!

Barielle’s six-pack of Fall colors, for example, called “Style In Argyle," are soft, intense, opaque creams. But upon closer inspection, and on your nails, they take on a sophisticated, trendy vibe.  More “speak softly but carry a bit stick”  than "I want to blend in." These colors, shown above, are easy to love. Barielle's shades will have you craving them all.

Just in case you wonder where Barielle got the notion to "style in argyle,"  the argyle pattern (of diamonds in a diagonal, checkerboard design) is derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll in western Scotland and from the patterned socks worn by Scottish Highlanders since at least the 17th century. These woolen socks, and sweaters in Argyle patterns, are always soft, heathery colors.

The six new hues of Barielle’s nail polish collection are evocative of soft woolen tones and cleverly named for fabrics, too.  But, they're really just a softened, more modern take on classic berries browns, nudes. mauves and so forth. Here's the rundown on the collection:

Cashmere or Lose Me - this is a soft brown with copper pearl –but there is just the merest hint of pearl–bascially this one adds a rich, deep nude tint to nails

Wool You Marry Me - this is a plum brown creme, but it has a more berried sensibility than a mere brown one.  If you are someone who just can't live without red and berry, this is the trendy option for you.

Tight Knit - this is a purplish brown creme.  It really is mostly brown, but you can see just a tiny bit of purple, peeking through.  It reminds me of a deeper and less berried version of Wool You Marry Me.

Aura Angora  - this is a royal gold creme. The color is very new looking, and maybe not for everyone. I like it because it is so dramatic.  In fact, it's really a bold,  creamy mustard on your nails.

Unraveled Rust - this is described as a burnt rust creme, but to me, it's a deep, berried brown...and very pretty.

Cowl of the Wild  - this is a mushroom taupe creme - taupe-ish, and temptingly new. Wear it and feel out your (slightly) wild side.

Shades by Barielle  aren't just beautiful, glossy, long-lasting, quick drying colors,  in shades that always reflect the current season, they are also created to keep nails with safe, and healthy. The products are "Three-Free"  That means they are free of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl-phthalate. The formula is even safe enough for women to use when they’re pregnant. TIP: You might be able to get away with just using one coat of these full coverage, colors, but you’ll probably want to use two, just to help deepen the drama of these unique shades. Let the first coat dry 1-2 minutes before applying the next coat.

Each bottle of Shades by Barielle is just, amazingly, $6.00.  Now that's a lot less than a sweater, or woolen socks!   Run to get them at barielle.com and ulta stores.

Mary J. Blige My Life Sings a Pretty and Souful Tune

R & B star Mary J. Blige (known by fans as 'the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul') Blige has sold over 40 million records and inspired countless stars of contemporary R&;B. Her own personal style has changed a lot since her first album in 1992 (“The 411" produced by Sean Combs).  Mary J. Blige's second album. "My Life" is a classic in the R&B world.

Times change, and so do the images of stars.  Like Queen Latifah, Blige seems more at home these days in the fashion world, appearing on red carpets in sleek evening gowns.  And she has created a new fashion collection, called "Melodies,"  with famed fashion  designer Catherine Malandrino. This, in support of Blige’s charity, FFAWN (foundation for the advancement of women now).  This charity, close to the singer’s heart, helps to empower women by shaping and supporting education programs. Check out the Melodies designs on HSN

It seems that every musical diva these days,  has her own fragrance.  Mary J. Blige's is also called "My Life."   a fruity floral that launched at the end of July on the Home Shopping Network ( HSN) and sold more than 60,000 units of the new fragrance in only about six hours, breaking fragrance sales records at HSN. Now that is really impressive!

You might assume that people bought the new fragrance in droves because they are fond of the woman behind it, and/or they are also familiar with, and fans of, Carols Daughter products. They might have also been very captivated by the packaging.  My Life arrives in a stunning, matte, gold box with a spray of shiny gold hearts, and "My Life" embossed in chocolate brown script. Inside the box, there's a truly beautiful, heart-shaped, clear, glass bottle that showcases the golden juice. The smoothness of the glass heart is punctuated with  “My Life” in shiny Gold script letters on the mid-section of the heart. The diffuser topper is a gracefully-curved oval with "Mary J. Blige" in bold letters, engraved into the smooth top.

This fragrance is beautifully packaged, but will the actual scent stand up to the hype and the packaging?  For the most part, it is satisfying. It’s not too sweet, nor too fruity, and it’s not a girly floral, and that's all good. Mary J. Blige launched this scent in cooperation with Carol’s Daughter, and that is something important to note. I have met Carols' Daughter founder Lisa Price, and she is a and amazing woman that I really admire. But I have to be honest: I am not a personal fan of Carol’s Daughter scents. The ones I have tried are just too “obvious.” You smell the individual notes, but somehow, they don’t quite seem to blend together. I have a similar feeling about My Life.

The top notes of My Life are gardenia petals, Bartlett pear and white freesia. You can smell the gardenia and the pear strongly, and immediately.  At the heart, there is tuberose, jasmine, golden lily and apricot blossom. These are also strong, white flowers and they don't overtake the top notes even though normally, they would.  And, while the base has notes that are “gourmand” and sensual: cashmere wood, praline, sesame and incense, the fruits and florals still overwhelm them. At final drydown, you can sense a hint of spice and creamy-ness,  but not as much as I would have anticipated. The scent does last on your skin a long time.  And that being said, this is a scent of mid-intensity, good for daytime, fine for night-time. Most people will find it pleasing, whether they're in their twenties, or much older.  And, it will appeal not just to fans of Mary J. Blige, but also those who might not really know her music. They will now identify her with her fragrance, which should win her a bunch of new fans of her music, too.

I think My Life is bound to win a lot of hearts. It is available in a 50 ml bottle with additional clutch purse for $55.00 and there’s a roller ball (love that!) For $25.00. . One dollar of every bottle sale will be donated to the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now.

Garnier's Greatest New "Hits" for Skin and Hair for Everyone, Everywhere

A few weeks ago, I found myself on the very scenic roof deck of the Empire Hotel, to view a bunch of products from Garnier. Like a great barbecue, there was a smorgasbord of a little bit of everything (hair & skincare) for everyone's tastes.

So what has Garnier "cooked up?"

I started by checking out a product that is supposed to tame frizz for a 7-14 days (depending upon how often you wash your hair).  The patented formula requires two easy steps: Step 1: Apply the 20-min Smooth-It Serum to clean, damp hair. Leave-in for 20 minutes, then rinse. And: Step 2: Apply the Heat-Activated Perfect-It Cream throughout the hair. Blow dry or flat iron as you normally would.  In all fairness, when something seems too good to be true, it often is. While the product does tame frizz, Step 1, the Smooth-it-Serum, also has an unfortunate smell. That wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but even following the instructions to the letter, it just didn't hold up to the humid and hot weather we have been having.  However, if you don't want to spring for a professional straightening/anti-frizz treatment, this one has Cysteine,  a protein building block found naturally in hair helps that helps to loosen bonds that keep hair frizzy and unmanageable, and rice oil, for deep conditioning and to help seal in smoothness.
At just $11.99 for each kit, if it works for you, it is going to be your new favorite treatment.

For men, Garnier serves up some hair helpers in terms of hair styling products, aptly called "Survivor," admirably decorated with masculine designs in eye catching green. These products are made with natural cactus extract, to help guys combat hair-style saboteurs such as humidity, wind and heat. For those who really need spiky hold, Garnier Fructis has Survivor Tough It Out Glue: Non-sticky styling glue.  Spkes get 24-hour, sweat-proof hold in an easy to tote tube, for just $4.89.  To get a rough, tousled, re-workable texture that lasts and won't look greasy,  there's Garnier Fructis Survivor Rough It Putty in a jar $4.89.   These products aren't for everyone, but for guys who require styling products, these have a simple to use formula and they smell clean, even when a guy is hot and sweaty. Now that's, priceless, let alone for under $5.00.

For everyone, there are new shampoos.  New formulas for Anti-Dandruff, and a shampoo that helps to keep color fresh.  Here's a photo of took of  some of the dandruff shampoos, and This summer, Garnier Fructis introduces new anti-dandruff shampoos, too.  They fight flakes with 48-hour dandruff control in two new formulas: Purifying Action: with Natural Extracts to purify hair and scalp for a deep clean; and Fortifying Action:  with B-Vitamins to strengthen hair.  There are  different types: Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Intense Cleanse, featuring purifying microbeads that scrub away dirt, grime and other things you don't want on your hair and scalp, to provide a long lasting cleansing.  Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Clean & Fresh makes your scalp and hair feel "alive" (ok, maybe not quite that, but at least, clean and refreshed).  Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Clean & Fresh 2-in-1 cleanses hair and scalp and give both, a bit of extra conditioning moisture where it's needed. Finally, there's Garnier Fructis Anti-Dandruff Dry Scalp Formula, that really helps to stop that irritating, itchy feeling. If you've ever watched someone scratch their heads when they're not confused, just itchy, you'll know why--and want to hand them a bottle of this new formula that stops the itch. All of the shampoos have 1% Pyrithione Zinc -- a must-have to handle dandruff flakes and scalp, and what I like even better are the clean fresh scents and the really nice looking packaging. These bottles feature colorful graphics on silvery bottles with teal-green ball closures at the top. You wouldn't think these were anti-dandruff shampoos at all. Impressive, and inexpensive at just $4.69 (13 fl. oz. bottle) and $6.99 (25.4 fl. oz bottle).

I like the Garnier Fructis Color Shield products, too.  The formula has been re-imagined, so that it not only protects the color you spent time, money and effort to achieve, but5 also helps to keep your hair from getting dry (a side-effect of adding color, and chemicals, to your hair).  I can't test anything long enough to say that Garnier's claim to keeping color "bold and brilliant - even up to 45 washes" is true, but I can tell you that the product has good things for your hair in it:  grape seed oil moisturizes, and acai berry is a powerful anti-oxidant. There are UV Filters  to help protect your color, and your hair, from the sun's harmful rays (remember: you still get sun exposure even on cloudy days and when you're just walking around, or in your car).  The Garnier Fructis Color Shield  collection has 3 products:  consists Color Shield Instant Color Sealer Lightweight Leave-In Conditioner (it has a lightweight gel formula, but it conditions like a creamy powerhouse);  Color Shield Fortifying Shampoo and a very moisturizing, Color Shield Fortifying Cream Conditioner.  I love the new, red packaging and the slight scent of strawberries, that makes these inexpensive products, fun to use. At just $3.99 (13 ox. bottle) for the Color Shield Fortifying Shampoo and Fortifying Cream Conditioner, and  $5.99 for a 6 oz. bottle of the Color Shield Instant Color Sealer Lightweight Leave-In  conditioner, you can't really go wrong.

A product I reviewed and really liked, was the Garnier Nutrioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller (srp. $12/99 5 fl. oz. I love the ease and portability of roller balls, and was captivated by this eye treatment, that felt cooling and rolled on my under-eye area (and in the process, gives the skin around my eyes a gentle massage). A roller ball is so user friendly, and clean, and nicer than sticking your finger into a jar of cream.  his anti-puff product eye roller that uses a unique combination of skin-nutrients that cool and stimulate the eye area including caffeine to decongest puffiness under the eyes and reduce dark circles, and Pro-Vitamin B5 to hydrate and refresh the delicate skin. If you’re someone with sensitive skin and/or eyes, you’ll be happy to know that this product is also allergy, dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested, 100% Oil-free, non greasy, and
gentle to skin.  But now there's a tinted version (a sheer, medium tint) that lets you conceal, as your eyes, "heal."  Clever!  Pop one into your purse for anytime you feel the need to de-stress and de-puff for eyes that look instantly renewed. Used over time, you may see even better, longer lasting results. It's a dumb pun, but I was "rolled over" by the concept!

The reason there are green apples in this photo, is to showcase one of Moisture Rescue's star ingredients, Apple Water Extract, to provide moisture and retain hydration.  There's also Grape Water Extract that provides antioxidants to help defend skin from external aggressors and Vitamin E, providing a natural emollient that soothes and conditions skin.  The moisture Rescue collection is really ideal for people whose skin needs a little something, but not the heavy duty moisturization of anti-aging creams and potions. The Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream: is cooling, light and oil-free, in a gel that adds moisture without "weight."  It's just $7.99.  For daytime there's Moisture Rescue Lightweight UV-Lotion:  perfect for younger skin and people who want UV protection (SPF 15) and moisturization, without coating the skin and making it feel sticky or oily (for up to 14 hours) and it's also just $7.99.  The favorite piece in the collection was a creamy, foaming cleanser called Moisture Rescue Fresh Cleansing Foam.  This is a thorough cleanser that leaves skin feeling toned and cleansed.  It's just $5.99 --that's less than the cost of a simple sandwich and a drink!

Some of us really need more protection from the sun, and Garnier's "new & improved" Skin Renew gives us everything we need to get through the day.  In 2008, Garnier launched Skin Renew Anti-Sun-Damage SPF 28, a daily moisturizer that works to protect skin against sun damage, while dealing with fine lines, sun spots, and uneven complexions. The product was good, and now they've made it even better. The formula now has Pine Essence, a powerful damage-reversing ingredient that Garnier says is ten times more effective than Vitamin  in breaking apart pigmentation clusters just below skin’s surface. The pine essence works with other skin nutrients to help diminish those fine lines, and age spots, while Lycopene + SPF helps protect your skin from further sun damage.  You'll feel the moisturization right away, and the SPF 28 is enough to cover your skin for daily wear, but with regular use, in time, your skin should not just feel better, it should have some visible results, too.   I'd call that "priceless," but you can try this new and improved product for $12.99, 2.5 ounce pump bottle.

At some point, you really need to bring out bigger guns in the war against aging, and wrinkles. Garnier Ultra-Lift Skincare now ha a new ingredient - pro-Retinol from Nature. While retinol does a good job of dealing with the visible signs of aging and/or damaged skin, it can really be harsh.  This new formula is touted as having a retinol-like action that’s gentle on skin.  It has a unique blend of natural linoleic acid derived from safflower and retinyl acetate, that will give you some of the benefits of a retinol, without pain.  I liked the formula, and as someone with sensitive skin who really can't tolerate the harsher formulas, this is an alternative. The retinol from nature is available in all four Garnier Ultra-Lift products: Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Firming Night Cream: Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Firming Moisturizer SPF 15; Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Firming Eye Cream; and Ultra-Lift Daily Targeted Deep Wrinkle Treatment.  Modern treatments for anti-aging and skin protection can be pricey, but these are just $14.99 each.  You might not get a miracle, but you will have the satisfaction that you are doing what you can to keep your skin looking healthy and younger looking.

YOU CAN GET ALL OF THESE PRODUCTS IN YOUR LOCAL DRUGSTORES AND MASS MARKET RETAILERS RIGHT NOW!  These are no-brainer little helpers that are affordable -- no need to ignore the health and beauty of your skin because of a lean budget.  They're good and easy to use, and, if you keep your expectations reasonable, surprisingly effective, too.

"I was drawn to color this season. Both subtle shades and brighter ones. I was fascinated with how it would then be applied/placed on the body." Molly Grad

Dentyne Pure is Inexpensive Insurance Against Bad Breath

My mother refused to let me chew gum.  She felt that it didn't look ladylike and didn't think it was good for my teeth. I'd go to school and bum pieces of friends.  And, when  I'd go to the movies with my grandmother, I knew she was good for a piece of gum.  After we were seated, she'd open her big purse that smelled of cinnamon, and pull out a package of Dentyne gum, handing one piece to me, and one to my sister.  How I loved unwrapping that little red-and white wrapped block of gum and popping it into my mouth!  Sometimes, I would chew it for an entire movie because it never seemed to totally lose it's taste.
Dentyne has come a long way since those good old days, and now it's clear that chewing gum actually has some quality health benefits associated with it.

For starters, chewing (sugar-free gum) after eating can help to stimulate saliva, which is your body's natural defense against tooth decay. Saliva actually helps to wash away food particles and neutralize plaque acids, which can weaken teeth.

Chewing gum (again, sugarless is best) can help you to avoid reaching for that sugary donut, or some other, more caloric treat.  When you have a great taste in your mouth, you don't need to binge.

Are you sometimes stressed out?  Chewing a piece of gum can help you relieve stress and keep your focus where it needs to be.  The next time you're stuck on an interminable line, or irritated by a comment, or you're just overwhelmed with things, try chewing a piece of gum.  You may find that your mood changes, in an instant!

But there's another reason to chew gum and it's not as polite to talk about it.  That reason is:  halitosis (bad breath for those of you who just want it plain and simple).  Bad breath can ruin more than your day. It can undermine your personal relationships and perhaps, even cost you a job or other important opportunity.

Dentyne has a new gum:  Dentyne Pure, that is being marked to (20-somethings) who need confidence and have to be sure that they don't have um....."undesirable breath."  Frankly, I don't think this is limited to younger people by any means.  How many times have you met someone new, whether it was for business, or pleasure and the minute they start talking you back off because their breath, reeks?  You wonder if they are aware of it, and realize they would probably be mortified if they realized it. According to Dentyne, over 91% of people admit that if they were talking to someone with undesirable breath, they’d sooner tell someone else about it or keep their mouths shut completely instead of informing that person directly.  Almost three in five (58%) would rather share an office with a loud phone talker than someone with eternal bad breath. and over eight in ten (84%) would sooner tell a boss about an error they made in a big meeting than inform them about their undesirable breath.

If you are worried about fresh breath, or just wish you could finally tell someone about their "problem," Dentyne Pure might be the way to handle it. Pop one of the large, slightly squishy, sugarless, Dentyne Pure "chicklets" into your mouth, and offer the pack to that bad breath offender.   Dentyne Pure is formulated with a unique and proprietary blend of ingredients called: "NeutraFresh,: which doesn't just mask the symptoms, it actually helps to purify your breath as you chew. The flavors are minty (e.g.a spearmint "with herbal accents") but not obnoxiously so.  Your mouth will feel fresh without deadening your taste buds for the resst of the day.

At a suggested retail price of about $1.29 per pack, for all the reasons I've mentioned (sorry Mom, but you really were wrong about chewing gum),  it is inexpensive "insurance" against bad breath encounters. You can find Dentyne Pure at Walmart stores and other mass market retailers.
